THE BARDO OF LIFE AND DEATH – A THREE WEEK SEMINAR

(online or face-to-face)

What happens when we die and what does buddhism have to say about the great question of death and what is beyond death. In this three-week seminar we will explore the root verses, ancient teachings from “The Tibetan Book of the Dead”. Our views about death and what will happen after death have an impact on how we live our life and what we believe it’s for. In brief, these Tibetan Buddhist teachings on what are called bardo’s, relate to moments of potentiality for something new to arise in our life, something of a greater vision beyond secular belief.

As the series will be going into the teachings of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which are more ‘advanced’, it will be helpful to familiarise yourself with the material a little before the course to get the full benefit. A good place to start would be to listen to the lecture Psycho-Spiritual Symbolism in the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Sangharakshita. You can access the lecture here.

‘The Root Verses of the Six Bardos’ exhort us to make the very best of our human situation – ‘Abandoning idleness… entering into Reality undistractedly’.These crucial six verses encapsulate the Buddhist vision for life, death, ‘rebirth’ and the promise of Enlightenment or what the Buddha attained.

  • Who is the seminar for?
The series is perfect for anyone with a deepening interest in Buddhism as well as anyone that thinks seriously about life and death and what these questions mean for us. This series is open to people with experience and complete newcomers, though some previous experience of the mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana will help as we will have periods of unlead meditation practice each week.
  • What you will do on the seminar?
The content of the seminar is devised by Jnanavaca – one of the London Buddhist Center’s (Triratna’s main London centre) senior-most teachers. Each week we will be looking at key verses from the Tibetan Book of the Dead and upacking what relevance the texts have to modern day life and how can we benefit from this ancient Buddhis wisdom. There will also be persionds of meditation and a change to talk in smaller groups.
  • Course resources
Each week you will be supported by teachings, group discussion, and a weekly emails re-cao with a zoon video recording of the session.

What we’ll be asking from you

    • Try to come every week – whether you feel like it or not. Mostly you only want to do something when you’re actually doing it.
    • Come early – so that you are ontime and we are not holding up other people waiting for you.
    • If are going to miss a class – email so we know and can let others know. And do come back the following week, come back and start again.

The course will be led by Sugarbha and Dhiyampati, experienced members of the Triratna Buddhist Order based in Barcelona. To participate you need an intermediate level of Enlgish although we can help with transaltion into Spanish now and then for key points.
